About the event

The compact disk was invented in 1979 and before streaming, it was the most sophisticated way to consume and store music. They defined our culture and helped us find our sense of identity. By 2007, an estimated 200 billion music CDs had been sold, (this excludes the DVDs, console games and computer software which also utilised this technology). Our material culture leaves a legacy; CDs can not be recycled.  Drawing on the tactile nature of the CD case, Within The Limitations is a project created by Gregory Daines in collaboration with Ashford Visual Artists, to reuse several hundred CD cases following a series of art installations by Lorrain Mailer This open call for submissions is open to everyone, over 18, to submit one piece of artwork that is 12x12cm, and no thicker than 0.5cm.  Depending on the number of submissions we receive, we hope to exhibit the collection at a future exhibition.  We'll document the submissions, so if you have a social media account, then please let us know your social media handles.  To follow this project, please subscribe to our Instagram page @AshfordVisualArtists. We can't wait to see what you submit!
