About the event

The Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) Foundation is thrilled to reveal its highly anticipated 4th edition BAB 2024: Nurture Gaia.

Titled Nurture Gaia after one of the many personifications of Mother Earth, her various historical expressions as a symbol of mother, nurturer, and giver of life, reaches across time and links cultures. Beyond Gaia’s mythic and mystical manifestations, she has also inspired scientific theories and philosophies. BAB 2024 will focus on differences between nature and nurture, complex ideas of femininity and feminine values, and contemplative engagements with ecopolitics, animism, and the supernatural.

The dedicated curatorial team of this edition is led by Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Bangkok Art Biennale. The team include: Pojai Akratanakul, Curatorial Section Lead, and former Assistant Curator of BAB 2020 and BAB 2022; Dr. Brian Curtin, art critic and educator; Akiko Miki, International Artistic Director of Benesse Art Site Naoshima and Curator; and Dr. Paramaporn Sirikulchayanont, lecturer and former Director of the Art Centre of Silpakorn University.

Also leading the artistic vision is a panel of international advisors: Marina AbramovićLito Camacho, Chairman, University of the Arts Singapore; Kim Camacho, art collector; Mami Kataoka, Director of Mori Art Museum; and Dr. Eugene Tan, Director of the National Gallery Singapore and the Singapore Art Museum.

The biennale will transform Bangkok into a city of contemporary art, exhibiting artworks in public spaces including Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC); the newly opened first phase of One Bangkok, a smart and sustainable new concept in urban planning; as well as juxtaposing contemporary art in important heritage sites and temples including at the Temple of the Reclining Buddha or Wat Pho; Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun; Temple of Iron Fences or Wat Prayoon; and Museum Siam (National Discovery Museum Institute), a museum dedicated to the history and culture of the Thai people, situated in the heart of old Bangkok, and more venues to be revealed.

Opportunities for artists and collectives The Open Call for Artists and Collectives will receive applications from October 28 to November 11, 2023. For more info visit bkkartbiennale.com.
