The Rainer family and the South Tyrolean Artists’ Association announce the third edition of the Martin Rainer Prize. While the previous editions focused on the themes Art and Space and Art in Transition, the current edition is dedicated to the theme Peripheries.
The peripheral played a central role in Martin Rainer’s work, as it did in the previous competition themes. The artist, who worked in Brixen, was never interested in what stands at the center, in what is situated in the middle, in static balance or precise equilibrium. His gaze was instead directed toward the edges, toward the fraying margins where contours become blurred. These places of uncertainty, incompleteness, and imperfection were brought to the center of his artistic practice—true to his belief that “perfection is majestic and boring.”
People on the margins of society, those moving between realities, and seemingly insignificant things—these undefined and indefinable subjects attracted him. It was…
