Competition task

Reason and goal of the artistic competition
The Authority for Culture and Media will implement a place of reflection for sexual and gender diversity at the Neuer Jungfernstieg/Lombardsbrücke location. In September 2023, the Hamburg citizenship approved the printed matter “Thinking Place for Sexual and Gender Diversity”, thereby enabling the realization of the Thinking Place for Sexual and Gender Diversity (Printed Matter 22/12602).
The thinking place is intended to create a place to appreciate diversity and remember exclusion and discrimination. It is intended to commemorate the stigmatization and persecution and suffering of non-heterosexual people as well as people outside the gender dichotomy since the beginning of the 20th century. At the same time, the thinking place should create a prominently visible space for all people in the LGBTIQ* communities and invite encounters, respect and acceptance. Purpose and aim of the competition The Ministry of Culture and Media will create a monument site for sexual and gender diversity at the Neuer Jungfernstieg/Lombardsbrücke. In September 2023, the Hamburg City Parliament passed the printed matter "Denk-Place Sexual and Gender Diversity", thus enabling the realization of the Monument for Sexual and Gender Diversity (Drucksache 22/12602). The Denk-Ort (monument - contemplative space) is intended to create a place for the appreciation of 'diversity' and the remembrance of their exclusion and discrimination. It is intended to commemorate the facts of stigmatization and persecution and also the suffering of non-heterosexual people and people outside the gender dichotomy. At the same time, the monument site is intended to create a prominent space for all members of the LGBTIQ* community and encourage encounter, respect and acceptance.

Type of competition The competition is carried out as an anonymous, non-open, single-phase artistic design competition with an upstream, internationally open application process. The competition procedure is based on the guidelines for planning competitions (RPW 2013). The competition languages are German and English. The required services will be communicated with the advertisement text in the further process.

The participants for the competition are selected from the applications received in the previous application process by a selection committee that is not identical to the jury of the subsequent art competition.

Established artists and established artists from the LGBTIQ* scene should be invited to take part in the art competition. The organizer suggests forming interdisciplinary working groups under the leadership of artists (e.g. with architects, landscape architects, historians, philosophers, etc.).
