About the event
Gallery Omata invites artists worldwide to submit entries for our online exhibition Dreaming of You.
Theme:
It's clear that dreaming, whether it be while asleep or awake, is an important part of the creative process. As artists, we often find ourselves in a state of daydreaming as our minds wander and explore new ideas and possibilities. So how much time do we spend actually dreaming? Miró claimed he did not recall his dreams while sleeping. Instead he found inspiration from his daydreams, “I never dream… Oh, yes! I do dream, I dream when I’m walking down the street, I dream all the time, but these dreams aren’t Freudian dreams. They are waking dreams. I’m always in a state of dreaming while awake. Of course! But dreams while I’m asleep, no.” Joan Miró in: Bruno Friedman: “L’esperit créateur dans l’art et dans la science. Interview de Joan Miró’’. In: Impact, Science et Société. So what does this mean for us as artists? Although you may not recall active dream states each night, it doesn't mean our subconscious isn't working hard behind the scenes - processing information and providing inspiration when needed. Our dreams can provide valuable insights into our own creativity so if you take some quiet moments throughout your day to tap into them - you never know where they might lead. Dreams are an interesting way for our unconscious mind to communicate with our conscious mind. They often contain characters that represent different aspects of ourselves, and it can be fascinating to explore the symbolism behind them. For example, if you dream of a wise old man this could symbolize your inner wisdom or intuition; a young child could represent innocence or potential; and an authority figure may indicate feelings of powerlessness in waking life. Artists have long used dreams as inspiration for their work – from Salvador Dali’s surrealist paintings inspired by his own vivid dreams, to Shakespeare’s famous ‘dream within a dream’ soliloquy in Hamlet. So why not use your own dreams as creative fuel? Take some time each day to reflect on any recent dreams you had and see what hidden messages they might hold about yourself! The exhibition Dreaming of You invites artists to explore their dream life whether it be while asleep or awake.
