Midwest Nice Art - Art as Storytelling

Art as Storytelling is our Fall 2024 online juried exhibition hosted on our exhibition site. the exhibition seeks artworks that explore narrative in visual art. We invite artists to explore the ways we share our stories visually. From creating a bedtime story to our histories and mythologies to an Instagram story, narratives inhabit our daily lives. Consider the ways you create and tell stories through your art.

This exhibition will be juried by Aline Smithson (she/her), an interdisciplinary artist, educator, editor, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, California. Smithson is the Founder and Editor- in-Chief of Lenscratch, a daily journal on photography. She has been an educator at the Los Angeles Center of Photography since 2001 and her teaching spans the globe. In 2012, Smithson received the Rising Star Award through the Griffin Museum of Photography for her contributions to the photographic community and also received the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award from CENTER. In 2014 and 2019, Smithson’s work was selected for the Critical Mass Top 50.

The exhibition will examine these ideas through a variety of mediums in art. Any mediums are welcome, including but not limited to photography, sculpture, painting, collage, digital design, video art, installation, ceramics, performance art…anything you can think of, include it! You may submit up to 3 artworks, and artists will receive a notification a week after the deadline. The exhibition will go live on October 1, 2024.
