About the event
The prestigious Paper on Skin™ wearable paper art competition is now open for entries!
Paper on Skin™ invites artists and designers to embrace the challenge of designing a wearable garment made from at least 80% paper. A biennial event, 2024 will mark the 7th iteration. The event is held in Devonport, Tasmania, and draws on the industrial history of papermaking in the region.
This year there are a total of ten awards, with a prize pool over AUD$14000.
The awards will be announced at a gala event and theatrical parade on September 21st, 2024.
All finalists' works will be exhibited at the Devonport Regional Gallery from Sept 28 - Nov 16. All works will be professionally photographed and a suite of films will be produced.
Note! There is a two-stage selection process:
• Round One of pre-selection will be based on the Entry Form Criteria no later than the 16th February 2024.
• Round Two of pre-selection will be based on a Progress Report and images no later than the 19th April, 2024.
The awards will be announced at a gala event and theatrical parade in the city of Devonport, Tasmania, on September 21st, 2024.
Prizes:
- Major Award - AUD$5000 - A work of creative and technical excellence, from concept through to execution. Must comply with entry criteria and essential requirements.
- Honourable Roger Jaensch MP Runner-Up Award - AUD$2000
- Tasmanian Hearing and Implant Centre, Dr Kellie Walker’s Encouragement Award - AUD$1000 - For recognition of talent and to encourage pursuit of the artform.
- Award in honour of Pam and Neil Thorne - AUD$1000 - A special award which reflects the core concept of Paper on Skin™, an idea conceived and developed by paper artist Pam Thorne with support from her husband Neil.
- Designer Dreaming – AUD$1000 - A work which evokes an historic period or draws inspiration from the glamour of couture design. This award is sponsored by Stephanie Reynolds.
- Professional Development Award - AUD$1500 - To fund professional and creative development opportunities for an individual artist during an 18-month period commencing Sept 2024.
- Mayor of Devonport ‘Behind the Curtain’ Award - AUD$500 - Selected by the Devonport Mayor at the conclusion of a ‘Behind the Curtain’ tour of the works hosted by Paper on Skin™ coordinators prior to the gala event.
- Awagami Paper Award in Recognition of the use of Handmade Paper - A selection of Awagami Editioning papers to the value of over AUD$500 - to recognise the use of handmade, artisanal and/or non-commercial paper. To be awarded by visiting paper specialist and workshop tutor.
- Paper as Textile Award - Value - AUD$1200 - For the best use of paper as textile, sponsored by Anzara Clark. Prize includes a limited edition, handbound collector’s copy of Paper As Textile Volumes 1 and 2 (with handmade samples), plus a 12-month Premium Patreon Subscription to Anzara Clark Art.
- Cocoon Designs Public Vote Award - $500 - Voted by the public during the Paper on Skin™ exhibition at the Devonport Regional Gallery Sept 28 – Nov 16. Results will be tallied at the conclusion of the exhibition.
