About the event
Unity Temple Foundation (UTF) and the Symposium of Art are proud to present Wright Interrupted: A series of curated exhibits that challenge artists to explore how contemporary artistic methods, materials, and social narratives engage with or radically depart from the visual vocabulary and/or ideology associated with Wright’s bold and experimental design for Unity Temple, more than a century ago.
Wright Interrupted: Call for Artists! As a centerpiece of the Symposium of Art event, Wright Interrupted invites artists to submit work for consideration in a juried exhibition that offers artists a rare opportunity to exhibit work at Unity Temple – Frank Lloyd Wright’s most important contribution to modern architecture, a National Historic Landmark and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Wright’s design for Unity Temple draws inspiration from the natural world and the American Midwestern landscape, characterized by horizontals, materials like stone and wood, and ornamentation extracted from botanical geometries. He was also interested in what he called Organic Architecture: a belief that humankind, nature, and the built environment must form a harmonious ecosystem to thrive and survive.
Considering these historic echoes, the human impact on the carbon footprint and climate change, as well as current social discourse, the jury is interested in artwork that explores:
- Innovative interpretations of nature and the Midwestern landscape.
- Artwork that investigates contemporary ecosystems and intersections of humanity, nature, and the environment in the 21st century.
The juried exhibit offers TWO CATEGORIES for artists to choose from. Two-Dimensional Artwork and/or a Digital Mural Competition. See entry details below for eligibility based on artist locale.
