Now in its fourth year, the BOit! International Illustration Contest stands as a premier celebration of visual storytelling, held annually in the historic city of Bologna, Italy. Established to champion the art of illustration, the competition fosters creative excellence and serves as a vibrant forum for cross-cultural exchange among emerging artists, illustrators, and visual creatives from around the globe.

Each edition builds upon Bologna’s storied past and its striking urban fabric—arcaded streets, medieval towers, and bustling piazzas—to inspire a fresh, thought-provoking theme. In 2025, the contest invites participants to delve into “The City and Water.” Entrants are asked to explore this evocative motif through their own unique style, interpreting the multifaceted bonds between urban centers and waterways: from the practical lifelines that rivers and canals have provided to the symbolic, spiritual, and architectural forms that water has inspired. Through hand-drawn works, digital renderings, and mixed-media creations, artists will reflect on how water has shaped economies, cultures, and the very identity of cities across history.
