The Abbey Harris Mural Fund was originally founded in 1926 with the purpose of offering financial assistance to artists creating murals or other artworks intended for public walls across the United Kingdom. The Fund was conceived with the intention of nurturing work that is both artistically ambitious and intellectually serious, and that legacy continues to guide its activities today.
Over the years, the Fund has remained under the careful stewardship of a dedicated group of Trustees, all of whom are practicing artists themselves. This unique aspect ensures that decisions about grant distribution are informed by a deep understanding of artistic practice and creative integrity. The Trustees are united in their commitment to supporting projects that demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship, conceptual clarity, and public engagement.
When reviewing applications, the Trustees’ foremost concern is the artistic merit and vision of the proposed mural or wall-based project. The quality, originality, and intent behind the work are critical components in the evaluation process. Applicants are expected to submit visual materials—such as sketches, concept art, or documentation of prior work—which the Trustees examine carefully. In addition to the artwork itself, applicants must also clearly articulate who the intended audience is, how long the work will remain on display (with a minimum duration of three months), and how the piece relates to its physical context or to the community it aims to serve.
This guidance is meant to help applicants consider the key elements of a successful proposal. It is important to note, however, that not every point may be applicable to every project. Applicants are encouraged to adapt the guidance to suit the specific nature of their proposal.
