Since its inception in 1926, the Abbey Harris Mural Fund has stood as a significant and enduring source of support for muralists and public artists working on wall-based projects throughout the UK. Rooted in a tradition that values creative ambition and serious artistic intent, the Fund was created to champion works that enrich public spaces and speak meaningfully to their surroundings.

What makes the Abbey Harris Mural Fund particularly special is that its Trustees—those responsible for selecting and funding projects—are themselves practicing artists. Their lived experience in the creative field gives them a unique sensitivity to the challenges and rewards of producing public art. With this perspective, they remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence, always seeking to support works that are both visually compelling and conceptually strong.

When considering applications, the Trustees look first and foremost at the aesthetic and intellectual quality of the proposed piece. This artistic vision is the central criterion upon which all decisions are based. To this end, applicants must provide detailed visual documentation, including past works and any preliminary designs or sketches for the proposed project. Beyond the artwork itself, the Trustees also assess how the piece connects to its intended audience, how long it will be displayed (at least three months is required), and the ways in which it engages with its site—whether culturally, historically, or socially.

The following guidelines are provided to assist artists in preparing their submissions. While not every point will apply to every type of project, these suggestions are intended to prompt reflection and help shape thoughtful, well-developed proposals.
