The Abbey Harris Mural Fund has been providing support to mural artists since it was established in 1926. Its purpose is to offer grants to artists who are creating murals or other types of wall-based art in the United Kingdom. From the beginning, the Fund has had a strong commitment to funding serious, ambitious, and high-quality public art.
The Fund is overseen by a group of Trustees, all of whom are professional artists. Because of their own experience in the field, the Trustees have a deep appreciation for artistic integrity and are focused on supporting projects that demonstrate originality, craft, and public relevance. Their main goal is to help bring exceptional and engaging art into public spaces.
The first and most important criterion used by the Trustees when reviewing a proposal is the artistic merit of the work. Applicants should include images of the proposed piece as well as examples of past work, so that the Trustees can evaluate the artist’s skill and vision. In addition, the Trustees want to understand the broader context of the project: Who is it for? Where will it be displayed? How long will it remain in place (with a minimum display period of three months)? How does it connect to its environment or audience?
This guidance is intended to help artists put together strong and focused applications. Not every section will apply to every proposal, but the points raised are worth considering as you develop your project plan.
