Since 2013, Apila’s First Printing Award has honored its mission to discover and celebrate new talent in children’s book illustration. As the 2026 edition approaches, the award continues this proud tradition, reaffirming its position as one of the most influential international competitions dedicated to unpublished picture books. Initiated by Apila Ediciones in partnership with the esteemed Escuela Superior de Diseño de Aragón, the award provides a rare and invaluable opportunity for illustrators who have not yet published a work with an ISBN to debut their voices in the literary world. Its legacy lies in championing creative excellence, diversity of artistic expression, and the transformative role of imagery in children’s education and emotional development.
This year’s contest reaffirms its focus on cultivating creative and professional growth. Selected entrants benefit from the combined strengths of a leading publishing house and a top-tier design school. Apila Ediciones lends its editorial expertise and production experience to ensure the final book is polished, engaging, and market-ready. Meanwhile, the Escuela Superior de Diseño de Aragón offers a strong academic framework for feedback and mentorship, elevating the quality and coherence of both the illustration and narrative. Through this collaboration, the award not only launches careers—it contributes to the cultural landscape of children’s literature by bringing fresh, diverse, and emotionally resonant stories to life for readers around the world.
