In 2019, fueled by an unwavering passion for the world of art and a resolute commitment to nurturing and celebrating artistic ingenuity, the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize was born. This monumental endeavor represented the culmination of three decades of tireless dedication by the Foundation to empower and elevate leadership and creativity in the realm of visual arts.

The essence of the Art Prize lies in its mission to provide invaluable support to contemporary artists by offering them an extraordinary opportunity: the chance to craft site-specific artworks. These creations, once brought to life, find a permanent residence in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, becoming treasured additions to the Foundation's esteemed art collection while enriching the tapestry of our cultural heritage.

In its third year, 2023 marked a pivotal turning point for the Art Prize. It evolved and expanded its horizons by embracing artists from across the globe, creating a global platform for artistic expression. Furthermore, the Selection Committee introduced a groundbreaking change by awarding not one but three equal prizes to the most exceptional proposals, thus amplifying the impact of the initiative.

As we approach the 2024 Art Prize, the tradition endures, casting its welcoming embrace upon both Greek and international artists. The competition aims to select three proposals, and each of them will be honored equally for their originality, creativity, site-specificity, and their profound connection with the theme of "Care." This theme aligns harmoniously with the Research Residency Programmes organized by the Foundation and the ongoing Care Ecologies project, which receives partial funding from Creative Europe.

The Art Prize's call extends to artists who conceive site-specific artworks that seamlessly integrate into their designated environments, telling internal narratives and serving as guiding beacons within their exhibition spaces. Following the public unveiling of the selected works in the summer of 2024, these creations will find their permanent home in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, thereby enhancing the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation's renowned art collection, which already boasts a treasury of over 70 exquisite artworks by celebrated Greek and international artists.
