8WEEKSinFEZ is a dynamic initiative conceived and delivered by Fez Art Residency. Its purpose is to pay homage to the UNESCO-listed Fez Medina, a labyrinthine urban jewel renowned for weaving centuries-old craft practices together with a vibrant undercurrent of contemporary experimentation. Within this historic maze of narrow streets and hidden courtyards, the program invites visual artists to slow down, immerse themselves, and kindle new ideas. Participants are granted that rarest of luxuries: unpressured time, ample studio freedom, and daily exposure to a living museum where potters, weavers, calligraphers, metal-workers, storytellers, and chefs still ply their trades as they have for generations.
For eight consecutive weeks in the autumn of 2025, Fez Art Residency will curate a rotating cohort of creators drawn from Morocco and from artistic communities around the globe. They will be accommodated in two fully furnished private apartments positioned deep inside the Medina’s walls—close enough to hear the muezzin’s call at dawn and to step straight out into the aroma-filled souks. Artists can opt for a long-form deep dive, staying the full duration, or they might choose a shorter, focused stay; the schedule is deliberately elastic.
The guiding philosophy could not be simpler, yet it is profoundly empowering: offer a roof, offer privacy, impose no production quotas, and then let the city itself serve as mentor, muse, and ever-present collaborator. Whether two painters elect to inhabit the space for the entire two-month period, or a succession of sixteen image-makers cycle through one-week micro-residencies, 8WEEKSinFEZ remains anchored in one core idea—Fez Medina is an inexhaustible catalyst for curiosity and creativity.
