Hosted by Fez Art Residency, the program known as 8WEEKSinFEZ is conceived as an artistic pilgrimage that honors the Fez Medina’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Far more than a picturesque backdrop, the Medina is an active laboratory where hand-built tradition and contemporary artistic vision are in constant dialogue. The residency’s chief promise is to provide each invited artist—whether Moroccan or international—with abundant time, physical space, and an atmosphere brimming with sensory stimuli. Cobblestone passageways echo with hammer-on-anvil rhythms, while mosaic-tiled fountains reflect shifting afternoon light—together forming a living soundtrack for creative exploration.

Taking place over the course of eight transformative weeks in autumn 2025, the residency will welcome a fluid roster of visual artists. Comfortable lodging is secured in two private flats nestled squarely within the Medina, placing residents mere steps from medieval madrasas, aromatic spice stalls, and rooftop terraces that survey the city’s sea of russet rooftops. The structure of participation is intentionally pliable: artists can negotiate stays ranging from a single, intense week to the entire two-month arc.

Crucially, 8WEEKSinFEZ imposes no production deadlines, exhibition requirements, or grant-report deliverables. It operates on the conviction that authentic growth emerges when external expectations fall away. By supplying bed, studio corner, and a culturally saturated neighborhood, the residency encourages painters, printmakers, photographers, and mixed-media experimenters to wander, absorb, and ultimately translate the Medina’s layered textures into their own evolving practices.
