Fez Art Residency proudly presents 8WEEKSinFEZ, an extended residential program dedicated to celebrating the Fez Medina’s status as one of the world’s great creative crossroads. Recognized by UNESCO for its historical significance, the Medina embodies a fusion of age-old craft processes—hand-dyed leather, carved cedar, delicately painted ceramics—and a newer wave of experimental art voices seeking unconventional studio contexts. By situating artists right in the midst of this tapestry, the residency aims to spark dialogue between heritage and invention.

Scheduled for the autumn season of 2025, the initiative will unfold over a continuous eight-week interval. During that time, a rotating ensemble of both Moroccan and international visual practitioners will call the residency home, living in two cozy, character-filled apartments tucked amid Fez’s winding alleys. From sunrise sketches on a rooftop overlooking the Bou Inania minaret to midnight brainstorming sessions punctuated by distant drumming, every moment is designed to encourage deep observation and unhurried creation.

Flexibility lies at the heart of the program’s design. Perhaps two artists will immerse themselves for the entirety of the two months, plumbing the Medina’s layers in exhaustive detail. Maybe sixteen artists will each experience an intensive seven-day burst, cross-pollinating fresh impressions week by week. Or maybe the reality will fall somewhere in between. What remains constant is the ethos: provide sanctuary free from quotas, nurture conversation rather than competition, and trust the city’s magnetic blend of tradition and imagination to ignite each resident’s studio journey.
