The Gwaertler Grant offers financial support for artists who want their work to create a real and lasting effect in the environment or community where it is presented. The focus of this grant is on artistic practices that are intentional, thoughtful, and rooted in the context in which the work will appear.
This grant is open to both Swiss and international artists, regardless of discipline. Whether you are working in visual arts, performance, literature, digital media, or any other form, you are eligible to apply as long as your project is in its early development phase and aligns with the grant’s goals. The support is meant to help artists build a strong foundation for their project by funding a wide range of activities that often happen behind the scenes in the creative process.
Examples of eligible activities include conducting archival research, initiating collaborations with individuals from other fields, and spending time on-site doing fieldwork. The grant also supports artists who want to connect with people from different cultural backgrounds, conduct interviews, enroll in training or educational programs, or organize public-facing events like workshops.
Additionally, the Gwaertler Grant can fund experimental approaches, from testing new techniques to engaging in unpaid apprenticeships that help expand your skill set or understanding. The grant is intentionally flexible to give artists the freedom to shape their own path during this critical early phase of development.
