The 5th edition of the PhMuseum Days Open Call is now live, offering visual artists a chance to be part of one of the most exciting contemporary photography events in Europe. Taking place from 1–4 October in Bologna, Italy, the PhMuseum Days International Photography Festival provides a vibrant setting where artists can present their work to an engaged and international audience.
This year introduces an exciting new collaboration: the festival will be held alongside Photobook Mania, now in its second edition. This addition transforms the event into a fully immersive experience, combining exhibitions, book fairs, and in-person interactions that celebrate photography in all its forms.
The open call includes a variety of exhibition opportunities designed to support different types of work. At least three artists will be selected for solo exhibitions in the festival’s main venue, offering high visibility and a dedicated presentation space. One project will be showcased as a large-scale public installation on former municipal billboards, while up to 40 images will be featured in a striking collective sculptural display. Additionally, up to 20 works will be presented through screenings, ensuring a wide range of artistic voices.
The theme for this edition, ARCHIPELAGO, reflects the complexity of our current moment. Inspired by Massimo Cacciari’s book, it invites artists to consider how fragmentation, crisis, and division shape our world—and how these conditions might also open pathways for new connections. Projects are encouraged to explore the idea of cultural “islands,” while fostering dialogue, inclusivity, and fresh ways of thinking about coexistence in a rapidly changing global landscape.
