Those who win in the monthly rounds are automatically advanced to compete for top honors in the annual competition. Although the competition is presented by PleinAir magazine—a publication known for its love of outdoor, on-location painting—the rules are inclusive. The magazine has long featured a range of representational art, including pieces completed in the studio. Therefore, unless a specific plein air category requires it, your painting doesn’t need to be created on-site. It’s understood that many plein air artists enhance or complete their work indoors, and others may venture into completely different styles or subject matters. This competition honors the creative process in all its diversity, with one guiding principle: great painting deserves to be celebrated.
