Conceived by publisher and art advocate Eric Rhoads, the PleinAir Salon has become a pillar of the realist and plein-air painting community over the past thirteen years. Modeled after the iconic 19th-century French Salon, this contemporary iteration unfolds in an innovative online format that stretches across an entire year. Each of the twelve months functions like an independent exhibition: artists submit their latest works, jurors deliberate, and a fresh set of winners is announced—keeping the creative momentum high from January through December. Those monthly outcomes feed directly into the marquee event, the Annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition, where past victors vie for top honors.
Annually, the Salon allocates $50K in straight-cash awards, ensuring that recognition is matched by meaningful economic benefit. The pinnacle accolade—the Grand Prize—includes publication on the front cover of PleinAir magazine, a placement that instantly elevates the artist’s profile among art buyers and industry professionals.
Prize packages begin early and often: category and overall winners for each month receive cash, are showcased in feature spreads and artist spotlights within the print edition, and their achievements echo across PleinAir’s e-mails, official sites, and extensive social-media network. Every monthly champion automatically secures a spot in the annual finals.
The competition’s dramatic conclusion is staged at the Plein Air Convention & Expo, a premier gathering that blends education, networking, and celebration. At the May 2024 event, the 13th Annual PleinAir Salon Awards ceremony will culminate in the presentation of a $15,000 Grand Prize check to the overall winner—an unforgettable highlight that underscores the Salon’s mission to nurture, reward, and broadcast artistic excellence.
