Thirteen years ago, Eric Rhoads, publisher of PleinAir magazine, envisioned a way to celebrate, support, and reward artists who dedicate themselves to the beauty of plein air painting. Inspired by the prestigious French Salon, first established by the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the PleinAir Salon Art Competition was born. Now, over a decade later, it has become one of the most respected online art competitions, offering artists not only a platform for recognition but also substantial financial prizes.
Each year, the competition unfolds over 12 monthly cycles, giving artists multiple chances to showcase their work and earn prizes. At the end of this year-long journey, all monthly winners are entered into the Annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition, where the stakes are even higher. With $50,000 in total cash prizes awarded yearly, this competition provides both financial rewards and career-changing exposure. The grand prize winner’s artwork earns the honor of being featured on the cover of PleinAir magazine, a prestigious milestone that can launch an artist’s career to new heights.
Artists who participate in the monthly competitions stand to win cash prizes, recognition, and promotional features across PleinAir magazine’s platforms, including the print edition, website, e-newsletters, and social media channels. The excitement builds throughout the year, culminating in the 13th Annual Awards Ceremony, which will take place live at the Plein Air Convention & Expo in May 2024.
The grand moment? One artist will take the stage and receive a $15,000 check, solidifying their place in the world of plein air painting. Whether you're an emerging talent or an established artist, the PleinAir Salon is your chance to gain exposure, win big, and be recognized among the best. Will your painting be the one that captures the judges' attention and earns a spot in history?
