The Annual PleinAir Salon Art Competition operates on a monthly basis, with 12 individual online competitions taking place throughout the year. Artists are encouraged to submit their work each month, and winners from these contests automatically progress to the final annual competition. This format gives participants numerous chances to be recognized, and each entry contributes to a year-long celebration of excellence in art. Over $50,000 in prize money is awarded annually, making this one of the most substantial art competitions of its kind.

This competition was created by PleinAir magazine, which has long supported both plein air and studio artists. As such, participants are not limited to submitting artwork painted entirely outdoors. While there are specific categories reserved for plein air pieces, most allow for any representational painting, whether it was painted on location, in a studio, or elsewhere. Many plein air painters begin their work outdoors and then refine it in the studio, while others prefer studio settings altogether. The competition’s main objective is to reward artistic excellence, regardless of the setting or process used to create the work.
