Balvi Municipality, in partnership with the Rothko Museum, is delighted to announce the opening of applications for the “Valdis Bušs 2025” International Painting Plein Air. This exciting event will be held as part of the Rothko Museum’s residency program and promises to be a vibrant platform for artistic exchange and creativity.
The Plein Air will take place in Viļaka, a picturesque town nestled in the eastern part of Latvia, with the aim of honoring the legacy of Valdis Bušs, one of Latvia’s most esteemed landscape painters, who was born in the vicinity of Viļaka. This event is a key part of an ongoing effort to establish Viļaka as a major destination for international artist residencies, distinguished by its commitment to quality, professionalism, and long-term cultural sustainability.
By participating in this Plein Air, artists will be able to experience Viļaka's natural beauty, its rich historical context, and its deep connection to Latvian culture. The event provides a unique opportunity to engage with the local community and explore the landscape that shaped the works of Valdis Bušs. Upon completion of the Plein Air, artists will leave behind their contributions to a growing collection of plein-air paintings, which will serve as a foundation for the future Valdis Bušs Art Centre. Until this centre is realized, the Viļaka Museum will safeguard the collection, ensuring the preservation of these works for future generations.
