Since 1986, the Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellowship has served as an incubator for the next generation of visionary artists. Rooted in the vibrant arts ecosystem of St. Louis, this fellowship uniquely bridges two cultural institutions: the Saint Louis Art Museum, where contemporary works find a prestigious platform, and the Sam Fox School at Washington University, where creativity is nurtured in the classroom and the studio.
Selected Fellows receive a $45,000 teaching award, enabling them to dedicate themselves fully to both instruction and artistic practice. They’re provided with their own on-campus studio, a creative haven equipped with everything from 3D printers to ceramic kilns, and they join a dynamic community of Sam Fox faculty and students. Perhaps most thrilling is the promise of a solo exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum—a milestone that allows each Fellow’s vision to be shared with thousands of museum visitors and the broader St. Louis community.
For artists eager to expand their pedagogical skills, deepen their studio practice, and gain museum-level exposure, the Freund Teaching Fellowship offers both the resources and the recognition to take that next leap forward.
