Ten years after its last major initiative, the Schweizer Strohmuseum (Swiss Straw Museum) once again extends a heartfelt invitation to professionals in the fields of design, art, and other creative disciplines. Artists and innovators are encouraged to immerse themselves in history and let the craftsmanship of the past ignite the ideas of the present. In this spirit, the museum is once more opening its archives and collection to the public, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the rich heritage of straw artistry.

The museum’s collection offers a fascinating window into the once-thriving hat weaving industry of the Freiamt region. Intricate weaving patterns, delicate ornamental objects, and exquisitely crafted hat models speak of a time when straw was not only a utilitarian material, but also the basis of an entire cultural and economic craft tradition.

In connection with this initiative, the museum is launching a design competition that invites contemporary interpretations of these historical techniques and artifacts. Participants are encouraged to explore, question, and reimagine traditional forms—infusing them with new purpose, materiality, or aesthetics. The goal is to generate diverse design responses that reflect both respect for tradition and bold creative vision.
