Where is contemporary art headed? Does the term still apply, or are we already entering something new?

Today’s art world is shifting in profound ways. For the first time in decades, the balance of power is leaning back toward the artists themselves. Social networks are not just places of connection, but stages where artworks are shared, sold, and discovered. Fresh voices are emerging, shaping the cultural conversation like never before.

The questions are timeless: how do past and present intersect, what forms will endure, and which will fall away? To explore these questions, we look to someone whose career has been dedicated to answering them: Dr Jean Wainwright, one of the world’s foremost Warhol scholars and a leading authority on contemporary art.

On 10 October, Dr Wainwright will open our exhibition with a talk that sheds light on this evolving landscape.

A historian, curator, broadcaster, and critic of international renown, Dr Wainwright has interviewed more than 2,000 artists, curators, and filmmakers, with many recordings preserved in Tate’s archives. Her publications, exhibitions, and curatorial projects — from Andy Warhol: My True Story (2025) to Gestures of Resistance — have shaped discourse on both historic and emerging practices. Beyond her scholarship, she champions new talent, ensuring that art’s future remains dynamic, inclusive, and globally relevant.

New Voices embodies this vision. The exhibition highlights the urgency and innovation of contemporary practice, uniting generations and disciplines. It is a space where tradition collides with experimentation, and where future possibilities are born.

Our gallery, situated in London’s iconic Tower Bridge district, stands at the heart of a cultural crossroads. Just steps from Tower Bridge, The Shard, and the Tower of London, the space welcomes over five million visitors who pass along Tooley Street each month. It has become a landmark for art and ideas, and now hosts New Voices.
