Zone Mag - 5th Collective Book Open Call

Here we go again. We’re opening submissions for ZONE’s fifth collective book. If you’ve followed us before, you probably know what this means. If not, here’s a closer look at how we work and what we’re looking for.

ZONE is driven by an interest in what happens when images meet. Not just visually, but conceptually—when images from different backgrounds, practices, and contexts begin to interact and form something larger than themselves. We think of these encounters as conversations, or even as a kind of organism, where each image plays a role in shaping the whole. By starting with the broadest possible range of submissions and paying close attention to how images resonate with one another, we allow unexpected meanings to surface. This approach is the reason we don’t define a specific theme: the narrative reveals itself through the images.

Our collective books are closer to artist books than to magazines. Each edition is treated as a singular object, with its own structure, materials, scale, and editorial logic. The form changes every time, responding to the work it contains. Still, there are lines that connect all of our publications. Over the course of our first four books, we have featured 498 artists from across the globe, creating a shared space where diverse practices can coexist.

All selections are made solely on the strength of the images submitted. We do not consider biographies, accolades, or professional standing. None of that matters if the work doesn’t function within the visual flow of the book. Although we actively seek to create space for lesser-known voices, visibility is never granted at the expense of cohesion.

We are especially drawn to work made by artists who allow themselves to move beyond the expectations of their own practice—those who experiment, take risks, and follow curiosity rather than formulas. Artists who are willing to challenge their own ways of seeing often create the most compelling contributions to the collective dialogue we’re trying to build.
